AwesomeYesterday, I was reminded by one of my long time clients, that mastery is a process. He is a talented young man who has dedicated hours and hours, week after week to his passion. I know this because he makes commitment on top of commitment to stay the course, to improve his skills, to better himself. I can’t say what it’s like to have a lot of natural talent and then to work over years to hone and improve it, but I do know what it’s like to have a business, and work to always make it better. I do know what it’s like to a be a mother who wants to be more for her kids. I do know what it’s like to want to be awesome at things I’m just not awesome at, yet.

I teased my client and asked, “is mastery not happening fast enough for you?” We both laughed because there are so many days when you can feel no improvement at all, or even like you are taking steps in the wrong direction. And then there are days like yesterday. When you can see the improvement, when you can feel the change, when you get just enough positive feedback to stay the course.

The thing about mastery is we recognize it only when it’s at that perfectly polished stage, when all the mistakes have added up and the lessons have been learned. Then we say, “Wow, that person is amazing. I wish I could be more like that.” We don’t recognize when someone is on the road to awesome, especially when that person is our own self. But as I was reminded yesterday, it’s about trusting the process. I’m on my road to awesome, I know that, it’s curvy, and sometimes I fall down, but it’s beautiful too. Just like yours. Because if you are reading this, that’s what you are doing, you are getting there one stride at a time. Keep going and enjoy the scenery along the way.
