How do you get through resistance? I was reading the War of Art by Steven Pressfield this week and I loved what he had to say about Resistance. He capitalizes it so I will too. He said that we all have to confront Resistance. He talked about the different forms of Resistance. Over-indulging in sugar, fat, and salty foods. Meaningless sex. Alcohol and drug abuse. We can also practice resistance in ways that are less obvious. We can practice resistance by thinking that we are broken and that we need to heal something physically or emotionally before we can take action. That acting out or acting badly is a form of resistance. Overwhelm is resistance. Those thoughts that tell us we can’t do it, or our work isn’t good enough – that too is Resistance. Basically, anything that steers us away for our purpose or our “work” is a form of resistance.

There is a short video interview that Pressfield did with Oprah last year where he talks about Resistance as a force of nature. You can watch it here. What I love about the interview is that he explains that Resistance comes second, first comes the dream. Resistance is the shadow of anything important that we want to do. He says that, “the more important an activity is to your soul’s evolution, the more fear you will feel.”  Storm incoming

In my work, clients come to me with what they want to accomplish in certain areas of their life where they have been experiencing Resistance or want to create change. I know, always, that in the seed of each commitment that they make is also the barrier that can keep them from completing it. The self-talk, the excuses, the Resistance. It is up to them to be so committed that they move through it, no matter how hard it is, because their Vision (or dream as Pressfield calls it) is that important to them.

Holding you accountable, feels like standing on the other side of that barrier and reaching through the inertia of that Resistance. I cannot pull you through it, that you must do yourself, but I can create a positive tension that helps you push through.

I love my work, and I am so happy that I found Steven Pressfield, if only to find someone that is well-versed and eloquent on a topic that fascinates me to no end. I hope you will watch the video and if you connect with it, pick up the book.
