Why do I know what to do, but still don’t do it consistently?
This is a common question that we hear from people when they start working with us: Why do I know what to do, but still don’t do it consistently?
First off, you’ve already won half the battle, you know what to do.
The other side is tougher, so what’s up with not doing it or not doing it consistently?
One client I worked with shared that she drank a green smoothie everyday for breakfast and that it made her feel great. That gave her the idea to build a green smoothie for her business. As a service-based business owner, there is no end to things you can do working on and in your business.
So we boiled it down to the core business activities that she needed to do to generate business. I think framing it as something that she was already really good at was helpful. It allowed her to zone in, got rid of decision fatigue and distractions, and made it simple enough that even on really busy weeks she could take care of her green smoothie ingredients.
What is your business green smoothie? What are the most important things that you need to do every week to keep your business healthy and growing?
Though she had a ton of things she could be doing, we got the essentials down to three areas of focus which took up just a few hours a week.
How to stay consistent:
- Drill down to what is most important. You can’t do all the things all the time, so what are the real needle movers? Whether it’s your business or your health or your finances. Whatever area you are looking to create consistency, keep your formula simple.
- Start small. Even though you might have an ideal you are working towards, be real with where you are and what you are currently doing and build from there. You will get to where you want to go.
- Put in the reps. Not every week is going to be a perfect week. Maybe you drink your proverbial “green smoothie” 3 days instead of 7, but before you were skipping entire weeks, it’s a win. It took us 2 AW sessions to lock and optimize the “green smoothie” work habits. Does that feel like too long or like a major success? Major success.
Consistency isn’t a personality trait. It’s a practice. And like any practice, it’s a lot easier when you have a plan, a structure, and someone holding you accountable.
If you’ve been craving consistency in an area of your life and haven’t been able to crack it on your own, that’s not a character flaw. It just means you haven’t pared down your ingredients, made it easy enough to start, or practiced making your green smoothie yet.
Everyone’s business green smoothie looks a little different. Private coaching can help you figure out what belongs in yours and build the habit around it.
