At Accountability Works, we often talk about aligned action i.e. doing what’s aligned with your vision and goals, not just what’s next on your to-list.
In a culture that reveres productivity and efficiency, it’s easy to get lost in our to-do lists. The problem? To-do lists can be deceiving. They give you dopamine hits and a fleeting sense of progress, even when the action isn’t important or meaningful.
Aligned action is different.
- It usually isn’t asked of you by others – it’s something you want to do.
- It may be hard to start, but completing it brings real satisfaction and growth.
- It moves you closer to who you want to become or what you want to accomplish.
At Accountability Works, we use this hierarchy:
Vision → Goals → Weekly Commitments
And we regularly pause to ask:
Is this the right action?
That’s where accountability and feedback come in, helping to stay aligned.
If you’re not sure whether your actions are aligned, try this:
1. Pause & Reflect: Ask yourself: Is this how I want to use my time, talent, and energy?
2. Reconnect with Your Vision: Remind yourself of the bigger picture. Are your actions aligned with what you want to create for yourself?
3. Trust Yourself: There are many voices in our heads at any one time. Try tuning in to your intuition or inner knowing—that’s the voice you want to listen to.
4. Let Go: Sometimes alignment means letting go of commitments, habits, or expectations that no longer serve you.
And here’s something we don’t say enough:
Sometimes aligned action means no action at all.
Resting. Sleeping. Doing nothing. Taking a break. These can be the most aligned choices you make.
Today, my aligned actions are:
✓ Finish this newsletter
✓ Go for a run
✓ Be present with my family
Yes, I’ll coach, teach, carpool, and cook, but I’m not confused about where my energy and attention belong.
